4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Research and Planning stage:
Through out these tasks i have been using a range of new media technologies, listed above, i feel that without these 'new technologies' i wouldnt have been able to create my tasks. To start off with i began using You Tube within the planning stages as this gave me a range of ideas of what i could do within my own trailer. Also this helped know what types of horror convetions were more effective and which ones werent as effective. You tube really helped me gather a lot of resecrah and ideas for my project and it helped me bring ideas to my group so that we could come up with a final idea. During the planning stages we created questionnaires i word processed the questions and handed them out within my class as they related to my age range of 15+. I then put the questionnaire on the website Survey Monkey, as i thought that this would give us a good age range and a good range of people could take the questionnaire. I also put the questionnaire on Facebook, this gave us a range of answers from the same age group as we intend.
Construction stage:
Click on this image to see my brief flickr analysis of final cut pro:
This is a screen shot of the Final Cut Pro software that i used to create my trailer. I have analysed it so that you can see what i used during the making of my trailer and how we achieved this. I feel our trailer wouldnt be as affective if we didnt use this particular software as it was very easy to understand yet really profeesional.
Then we began using a HD video camera to record our trailer clips. To arrange these clips we used the software Final Cut Pro. This software was only available to us through an Apple Mac computer. Final Cut Pro was a good software to use for editing our trailer and piecing it together. To create our Production and distribution company names i created them on Photoshop as this gave me a larger range of text and effects that i could use. I also used the website Da' font as it gave me different effects that i could use on the text. After finishing the trailer we made magazine covers and film posters using Photoshop. I made mine on Photoshop because i feel this software is the best for creating anything. To research magazine covers and film posters i used Google. This helped me understand what they looked like and the features that were on them. Then i had to post all my work to my Blogger blog so that it could be seen by many people. To get the images for my magazine and film poster i took images using a digital SLR camera so that i could get the best quality within my photographs.
Evaluation Stage:
During the evaluation stage i have been using a range of new technologies so that i can achieve my work in the best possible way. I have been using the Wordle online software because i feel that this makes a really nice interesting effect to words and shows them in unique ways. I also have been using Photoshop to make Montages and Film Stills. To analysis my film stills i used Flickr, i fink Flickr a really nice site to use as you can add little notes in interesting ways instead of one big block of text.
I feel that during the this whole project i have found it really easy to overcome most of the tasks as thoughout each of the stages i had use web 2.0. I feel without being able to use the interenet it wouldnt have give me a very good understanding of what film trailers actually got across to the audience. Also i feel that i has helped me gather together a lot of information for the research really quickly and effectively.
2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
I feel that my horror trailer, film poster and magazine cover really work well as a promotional package. I feel that this is achieve because they all relate well together and have similar aspects to them. But the magazine is used for publicity to show the success of the trailer/film. So the magazine doesn't have to have a direct link to the trailer as well as the film poster does because this is the film poster and the trailer are more for advertising the film before it comes out on dvd or before it comes out in the cinema.
I have used similar title colours and styles this help promote the movie as people will know what movie it is and where the title/style is from. On the other hand i have used different effects on the poster and magazine cover as i feel that this helps the advertising of the movie.
Title from my film poster:
This is an example of this from my horror teaser trailer.
I really like the way that her eyes are darkened really adding to the evil effect.
Here is the images that i used for my magazine cover and my film poster. I feel the image i used for my magazine cover really gets across the killer in a different way. I like the way that the image i have used for my film poster really links to my movie trailer as its from a clip and really shows a close up of the killer. I like they way that all my advertisements fit well together but they do it in different ways so that the audience find out more about the movie and makes them want to go watch it. I have also used the same distribution and production companies on my poster and in my trailer using the same styles, this helps link them together and have a strong similarity between them. I have made other connections between my trailer and my poster. Like i used a still image of the monster in my trailer to create my poster as i thought that this was more effective and really linked the to together. I really like the ways that the poster and the trailer link well together. This helps the advertising to be effective because they have similar qualities like the title, colours and imagery. Also this is helped by having a main tag line within the movie and the poster as this connects them, this also helps if there is a sequel to a certain movie.

These are images that i have used in my poster and my magazine cover as you can tell they are very different. i wanted them to look different as the poster image is suppose to promote the film and advertising it so that it would get noticed. But the other image is the character in her natural form indicating the publicity for the movie was good and it was successful in the media. The success of a movie is displayed within many different forms as they want to display the reviews and this makes more people want to go see it. This i feel is another way of advertising the movie itself because if other people like it then people think that they will like it to. The different ways this gets across to the public is by displaying it in magazines, reviews on the cinema sites, on TV etc.
Over all i feel that even though my horror teaser trailer, film poster and magazine cover don't have many similar aspects that they get across the movie in different ways. I feel that this helps them work better as a promotional package because they all show a different side to each of the trailer. Showing these different ways of the film really help the audience see a glimpse of the movie and hint towards what it is going to have within it.

Even though i have used the same font i feel they don't work well as a promotional package to promote the movie as they all look different. I feel the most effective title is the title from my poster as this has more texture and it helps the movie to have a more scary feel about it.
I feel that my trailer has a really dark feel about it as this adds to the fear that it within it as people often think the dark is scary. i used this dark theme throughout the trailer and on each of my advertisements by using a lot of black. For my film poster and my magazine cover i have used images of the person playing the killer because i feel that this helps promote the killer and the magazine cover gets people to want to read what the movie was like. I think the person who played the killer in my trailer did it really well as she looked creepy and glared at the camera a lot. This is an example of this from my horror teaser trailer.

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
To gain a greater understandment of our group horror trailer we gathered feedback from our class after watching our first version of our horror trailer. As we had technical difficulties when editing the trailer didn't quite have as greater impact as we would have hoped. we used our class to give us audience feedback as they were in the age range, 15+, in which we set our trailer. From our feedback we got a lot of likes and dislikes. This is important as it gives us different opinions of what we could improve on.
In our results some people said they liked the opening scenes as they had a slow build up. They also liked the opening scenes as there was a lot of different effects to help the trailer look more scary. Some of the effects we used were clipping the shot up and adding a filter to it surface so it create a more of a creepy feel. Although some people thought that the effects were repetitive and some were used too often. These opening scenes also had a good review on the camera work. This is important as the camera needs to have interesting angles/shots to help the trailer have more of a horror feel to it. They also liked the scene where the girl was pulled down the stairs by the killer. But I feel myself that it could have had more of an impact to it. The last point in our positive audience feedback was that they liked the scene where the person holding the camera was getting stabbed and the camera dropped to the floor signifying a death. On the other hand some people didn't like the amount of stabs that the killer was producing as they thought it 'dragged' on. Even thought we had inter titles some of our audience said that they didn't quite understand the narrative and it was unclear what went on with the killer. Another critic said they would have liked to hear more voice overs to help understand it a bit more. Many of the audience feedback's said that the music didn't quite flow well with the trailer and what was happening in the shots. They said it ' didn't build up enough tension'. Others said it ' was too loud could hear voice overs' and the music change 'had a bit of an awkward pause'.

Differences between a teaser trailer and a theatrical trailer
Teaser trailers just give away a small parts of the film and tend to be quite short. Where as a theatrical trailer contains much more detail aboutt the movie its advertising and is a lot longer. Teaser trailers dont give away what the movie is going to be about. This is different to the treatrical trailer as this lets you know what the story if going to be about this is why the theatrical trailer is generally released nearer to when the movie itself will be released. Where as the teaser trailer is released months in advance just to give you a little clue about the movie. This is so that people wonder what it is going to be aboout and makes them want to go see the movie.

An Essay About How Women Are Represented Within The Media
Carol Clover in, Men, Women and Chainsaws, argues that horrors representation of gender is very interesting because it frequently offers its core target audience of young males an identification with a female character, unlike any other mainstream genre. To what extent do you think horrors representation of gender challenges dominant representations?

Whereas Eden Lake (2008) it is visible that there are more males roles within film. But we see a more modern society but that of a lower class and this is shown by the differences between the main protagonists and the rest of the characters that have a more back role. We see the main protagonist, Jenny, to be quite domestic as se is very caring for others around her and she is a teacher. At the beginning of the film we see Jenny as an object as we go to a point of view shot from a male looking at her in her bikini through binoculars. But the male gaze is undermined as we see Jenny as the subject in the next few shots. In this movie we see more male deaths then female therefore women are not punished for transgression.
Over all I think that horror movies will still have a female being objectified by a subject as this is what keeps the main audience to keep watching them. I think that this courses gender to still be in stereotype categories. But I feel over time that it may equal out as there is more availability and rights within the media. At the minute many horrors do challenge the stereotypical role of woman but it isn’t commonly used within a wide range of media. But then again there always has, in some horror movies, been a final girl could this have always been a sign of it beginning to equal out.

Role Of The Distributor
Identifying with the Audience.
The role of the distributor is to make sure that their type of movie is watch by a large range of audiences. They do this by developing interesting and exciting titles that catch your eye and get an interest in the film. As the media industry is progressing everyday people are now more aware of the internet and the many ways that they can use it. Because it is now know the 'digital age' people are now known to look up on the film on the internet before going to see it in the cinema. This also helps them get information on the film like who stars in it who directed it etc. This also lets them have the opportunity to have a look at the teaser trailer. It is said that seeing a movie is always better at the cinema it has these key factors 1) its has the 'greatest impact' for the film as the screen is high quality, the sound is loud and clear and (depending where you go) the seats are comfortable. 2) you can sit there for the duration of the movie being 'uninterrupted'. 3) it gets you involved with the movie making it a 'larger-than-life adventure'.
The Distribution Plan.

Before the film is released into the public view the distributors have to plan out when and how it should be released to make sure that they get a good reaction from the public. To get this information to help them know when the right time to release a film they have to have a range of knowledge in different areas of the distribution sector. Like 'Market Knowledge' they need to research into what in the market at the moment and whats selling and whats not selling. They research this 'Statistically' so that they can work out what the best time for the releases of different movies depending on the mood of the media. Also they need to have a 'Professional Judgment', this is so if they do put it out in the media they know it will do good or not. But sometimes the audiences can be unpredictable as no one officially knows what people are going to do. They sort of make peoples minds up when they find out ways to do more in depth research. Like pre-releases of the film to see what people think about it from a range of ages and groups. Also they do 'test screenings' this is so they can get a feel of how many people will buy tickets to go see it at the cinema.
Market Plan.
To get their films noticed they have three main ways of putting out to the public. They three main ways are Advertising, Publicity and Promotion.
Advertising:
They advertise through a range of media like posters, online advertisements, billboards, newspapers, magazines, mobile internet and through social networks. They advertise through this media as its were people will notice it. As the more people subconsciously see something it will stay on there mind, this is the way that most people get into watching a film. Advertising online is the easiest advertising as lots of people now use free online social networking sites and you tube and these sites are only free because of the advertisements within them. Also films are advertised through making their own social network page this gives viewers a chance to write comments about it and to see what people think.
Publicity:
The movie can get lots of publicity is there are well known actors/actresses within the film. But on the other hand its intriguing to see new faces within the red carpet and see how they act/ react to the public eye. Also the crew members that help create the film always get the attention of the public. They like to see a well known director/producer making another film as they know whether it will be good or not. Another source of publicity is through biographies that people have done that maybe made an appearance in the film or even starred or produced. Movies also get their publicity from the synopsis of the film telling the public facts and teasers of what the film has in store.
Promotion:
Movies get there promotion fact by displaying if they have links to other films or partnerships with other films. This then makes people want to watch the film as its similar to another or created by the same people. Also they could have 'Branded Product Placement' this is were the film is made by a certain familiar company.

Horror Trailer Planning
The title of our horror trailer is THE HANGING, this is a working title as we found it difficult to make the title sound more catchy and interesting. We first thought of this idea for our horror trailer trough researching different horror trailers and then getting ideas and adding them together. So far we have been planning our horror movie trailer through a storyboard but we have also gathered a range of ideas within our head. Like we have changed the middle of our storyboards so that the girl returning from the dead returns back to the house. This is so that we can get more of a story behind our horror movie trailer as it was too much like a scene rather then a quick snappy trailer.

Storyboards
These are our storyboards of what we plan on shooting over the next few weeks. Each one shows the shot we plan to create and shows which effects that we will try and use during the editing stage. At this stage some of the scenes that we shoot will not be the same as the storyboard as things will change during shooting and editing with different effects.

Audience Research Results
For my audience research we gathered questions together that related to our Horror trailer idea. We started off by adding our questions to an online survey called Survey Monkey, this was really successful as we got a range of answers from a range of people from all different ages. But putting a questionnaire on the internet has a lot of flaws, as you don't know who it is that is answering the questions. I think that if you wanted too see what type of people were taking the questionnaire you could have maybe had a face to face interview with people. This would also help you get a range of ideas and suggestions from them as you are taking to them one by one. Also we word prossessed the quesstions and handed them out to a range of students ages between 16 and 19, this was also successful as we got a range of feed back from our own age range making us understand what teenagers like to see in horror films. This was better as we saw the people taking the questionnaire but on the other hand we could have asked them what they would do for a trailer to compose some more ideas and to get more involved with the person taking the questionnaire. As well as this we posted the survey on Facebook, i didnt think that this idea worked very well as many people didnt do the survey. As on social networks people are not interested in taking a survey. I think that a better idea would have been to maybe get a group of different aged people together and asked them as a group what they wanted to see in a horror trailer as this would have been more efficient and we could have got a lot more answers from a bigger range of people. I think that we got a wide range of results through displaying our survey in many different ways. But i do think that we could have displayed our survey in different ways so that we could get a much wider range of results and ideas to improve our trailer ideas at this stage. The feedback we have recieved is all good and relates to our ideas for our horror movie trailer at this stage of the task. I feel that taking all the answers to these questionnaire in is good as this well help us create something that most of the population will like depending on there likes and dislikes of horror.

Moodboard :)

This is my moodboard of things that i find scary within a horror film. The things i find scary are creepy children, the dark, graveyards, scary faces and dolls. I feel that these make us scared as they are all elements of horror movies and we have got it into our head that they are scary to us.

Movie Trailers
This trailer is from the horror movie The Blair Witch Project. I have chosen this trailer as i really like the idea of using a hand held camera effect as it adds to the scariness of the horror theme. I also really like the way that the camera is dropped on to the ground at the end of the trailer this looks really effective and shows that the movie will have a fatal ending. We also plan on using a scary woodland setting but we want it to have that personal feel so we plan on bringing the killer home. I feel that this trailer is really scary as the killer is never shown within it i think i would like to see the killer within my horror trailer as then people will have something to be scared off. I also like how the trailer has a lot of jumps and cuts within it this adds to the fear of it and i will try and make the happen in the editing stage of my trailer.
This is a horror trailer from the film The Ward. I really like the way that this is set in a mental hospital and the idea of being trapped. I also like the idea that they use of time and its running out. I feel that these effects are really effective as this shows there is no way out. I like the way that there is no way out that why i want to create the idea of bringing home the killer as this would then make the trailer more personal as it would be invading someones life. I also like the idea of having a killer on the loose and her looking creepy for my trailer i plan on making my killer look really scary with the use of makeup, latex and fake blood. I also will try and incorporate the fact that there is no escape then this way it keeps people on edge and they don't know what is going to happen.
This is a trailer from the movie I Spit On Your Grave. I chose to use this trailer as i really like the way that she kills the people that has harmed her one by one like a revenge. I also like the fact that the movie is set in the woods and has a really creepy feel about it. From the trailer i would have been convinced to watch the movie and i want my trailer to have this type of effect. I like the fact that the killer is a woman and i think that this makes the trailer scarier as i find that female killers are more intimidating as women are generally more spiteful then men. I also think that the fact someone was hanging in the trailer looked really effective and i hope to use this effect in my trailer.

Narrative Theroy
We applied the theories and ideas of four narrative theorists to the 1980 film The Shining. These four theorists are:
Vladimr Propp: is a Russian critic who studied 100s of examples of folk tales to see what they had in common. He identified 8 main character roles and 31 main narrative functions. He thought that his theories linked to most movies/ programmes.
His ideas are not well suited for the movie the shinning. As the movie confuses us with not knowing whether the villain is Jack ( the main character) or is being manipulated by the past spirits. We do get the impression that the Cook, Halloran, is the donor/ provider as he brings the snow plow to the hotel but this also gives us the impression that he is the false hero as he went there to save them but he gets killed. He is also the provider as he gives Danny the information on what his gift was and what it shows. This also gives us an understanding that Halloran is also the helper as the snow plow helps the victims/heroes get away and the information Danny gets helps him understand what is happening. But we also see Tony as Danny helper as he helps him se what happens in the future/ past and this gives us as the viewers a better understanding our selves. The victim/ Hero role is Wendy and Danny as they switch between being the victim and the hero, as they help eachother either way. Also his narrative structure doesnt really apply to this film because some of the set structure is done befroe other parts and there is a Preparation, Complication, Transference and Struggle but there is no Return or Recognition. this is because the film ends with Wendy and Danny driving away in the snow plow left there by Halloran whilst Jack is frozen in the maze.
Tzvetan Todorov: Todorov sugests that all stories begin with noramity then there is an enigma then pathway to resolution then finally the closure. I dont think that this theroy is realted to some stories as there could be a flase closure of some sort or maybe even a cliff hanger. But for the film the Shining this relates really well. As everything seems to start of well, Danny was told to not go in a room which he did then everything started happening. Then they had to find their way out of the hotel to get to saftey. We know that film is ended when we see the villian frozen in the snow this is the closure of the film.
Claude Levi-Strauss: looked at narrative structure in a way of binary opposites. Theres are stes of opposites which reveal the structure of media texts. The binary opposites in this film The Shinning are:
Past - Present
Cause - Effect
Good - Evil
Natural - SuperNatural
Normal - Abnormal
Community - Isolation
Sanity - Madness
I think that this really shows what the shinning was about as the past did come back to 'haunt' the present as they turn the main character, Jack, into the killer. Also he started off as the good guy at the beginning of the film trying to make a living for his family and acting very polite and kind to them, but as the film progresses we see him get more violent and insane as the hotel slowly 'swallows' him. There is a really super natural feel about the film as they start seeing people that aren't actually there like the 'bath tub woman' she starts off all natural and pretty then when he looks again she is an old woman rotting away. Also we see this when the little boy, Andy, sees the twins in the hall way one minute they ask him to play and the next scene is then dead. These scenes have a really abnormality about them as they are beginning to go insane as soon as they go to the hotel. This mainly is shown through Jack as he shows his insanity by being distant from his family and he starts seeing things. I think that this theorists theory really gets over this film as its full off opposites.
Bordwell and Thompson: These two narrative theorists look at the effects of cause and effect throught time and space during movies. This shows us how to make sence of the movie as we see a long shot of a house then we would slow zoom in then cut to a room. And by it slowing zooming into the house we know that that room was in this house. There are 3 distintions of time within a film:
*Screen Duration * Plot Duration *Story Duration
The 3 distinctions of the Shinning are:
* Screen Duration= 115minutes *Plot Duration= 6months *Story Duration= 60+ years
I think that this film shows the effectiveness of the film plot by showing flash backs that happened over 60 years ago and adding them into the main characters world, Jack. They manage to tell us the complete story of how things happened but then we see an image that was taken over 60 years ago and Jack was in it. This then confuses us not knowing if the original killer was Jack or if he has taken the killers place.
I think that there is two main theorists that link well to this film they are Vladimr Propp and Claude Levi-Strauss. This because nearly all there narrative features fit the structure of the film well.
Vladimr Propp: is a Russian critic who studied 100s of examples of folk tales to see what they had in common. He identified 8 main character roles and 31 main narrative functions. He thought that his theories linked to most movies/ programmes.

* Screen Duration= 115minutes *Plot Duration= 6months *Story Duration= 60+ years
I think that this film shows the effectiveness of the film plot by showing flash backs that happened over 60 years ago and adding them into the main characters world, Jack.

Freud's Concept of The Return of the Repressed
The return of the repressed is where repressed elements from a persons past/childhood is brought from the unconscious to the conscious mind. He believes that we have no memories of events that happen in our early life because of the repression that effects them. The repressed is not destroyed in the unconscious mind, it emerges in the form of a derivative of the unconscious but they only see distorted images as it it still retained in the unconscious mind.
This links to horror as the killer is driven with insanity and kills people linked to what happens in her/his past. This is because their repression is brought to the conscious mind and this causes them to act out not knowing that they are reliving their past experiences. Most film makers play on this theory by introducing the film, like Halloween, into the killers past then showing present day and as we go through the movie it explains more by showing 'flash backs' of the parts that is left in the unconscious mind.

The Conventions of a Horror Trailer!!
Settings: This trailer is set in peoples homes giving the impression that no where is safe. The tall buildings at the beginning of the trailer shows that it is set in a city, this tells us that even though there is people all around the killer wants us to know that it is un safe. At one point in the trailer we do see a abandend Juvinial centreand this was were the killer spent most of his life as he was seen as a troubled child.
Technical Code: There is lots of camera movements during this trailer. The handheld camera technique is used so that it would show the panic of the vitim and helps us the audience relate to this. There is some extreme close up so that the audience knows who the vitims is, this is also to show us their emotions. Point of view shot is used quite a few times so that the audience is put in the shoes of either the killer of the victims. Being put in the shoes of one of the characters really helps the audience get involved with the movie, so that they are more scared as they feel like it happening to them.
Iconography: Never see the killer face as he is in darkness and shines light directly in the vitims (the audiences) eyes so his identity is hidden. Shiney the light on his victims so that we see them clearly. High lighting behind him to create shadows of the killer. Uses a hand made time hour glass to time 1 minute using his own blood. Weapons are everyday tools like cutters, knife and welding tool. Seen as the insent child to begin with then changes dramaticlly as he is told he could be set free from the isalam.
Narrative Structure: Goes through the story getting revenge on everyone who treated the killer badly whilst telling the main protagonist what happened and how it involves her. finally gets the last girl on aniversary of 'their' mothers death. False closure then cliff hanger at the end.
Character Types: Main Protagonist is a woamn who works hard at college, is smart and final girl.
The killer is psychotic kills his victims according to what went on in his past. Hidden by darkness.
Police not very good at their job as killer kills main protagonist father who is police, steals police car and kills with police all around.
Victims they seem to have alot more than the killer does, effected his past as he was treated badly and not well looked after.
Themes: Return of the repression as he kills victims according to his past and how they affected him or treated him badly. During this clip we see the hidden evil in side the killer as he makes his victims choose between two difficult choses in a really sick gory way.
